What is beard oil and why use it?

Beard oil consists of oils, of course. There are base oils –or carrier oils– that make up beard oil. The carrier oils we use are organic jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, and fractionated coconut oil. On top of the base oils are essential oils. These oils are what give beard oil their fantastic scent. Essential oils are natural oils, typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant, tree, flower or other source from which it is extracted.

Beard oil is a great conditioner for your beard and for your skin underneath. Beard oils hydrate and rejuvenate your beard. Beard oils soothe dry skin, soften your beard, promote a healthier and shinier beard, and helps to prevent “beardruff” (beard dandruff).

Beard Oil vs. Beard Balm

Beard oils and beard balms both have the same nourishing, hydrating, conditioning, rejuvenating, and great-smelling effects because they both contain many of the same ingredients (carrier oils and essential oils). However, beard balms also contain beeswax and shea butter. These two ingredients –beeswax especially– give the balm stiffness and holding power so that you have more control over shaping and styling your beard. Our beard balms have a light/medium holding power. We craft our beard balm recipe so that it comes out of the tin easier and easily melts down in your palms as you rub your hands together. You can use one of these products, or both at the same time! It's really a matter of preference.

When is the best time to apply beard oils and beard balms?

Apply your beard balm or beard oil after a shower. When you shower, you open up the pores in your skin, which makes it easier for your skin to take in the moisturizers and other nutrients that are in beard balms/oils. To get the best results from your beard balm/oil, you should apply it immediately after getting out of the shower and take advantage of those open skin pores. Remember to dry your beard before applying beard oil to prevent the water on your skin and in your beard from making it difficult for the oil to do its job.

Ingredients?

At Beirdo Beard Company, we use all natural ingredients:

Jojoba Oil
This oil most closely resembles the natural oil your body produces to protect your skin. It helps balance your skin's oil production, which is especially helpful for those with very oily skin. It treats dry hair, moisturizing and nourishing it from the follicle out.

Grapeseed Oil
Antioxidant & Anti-Inflammatory. Helps treat and prevent acne and pimples. Astringent and moisturizer, softens and tones skin. Treats dandruff. Softens hair.

Sweet Almond Oil
Almond oil softens and conditions beard hair and creates healthy skin beneath the beard. Also helps prevent itchy and dry skin.

Coconut Oil
Easily absorbed for comprehensive moisturization without clogging pores. Can also help to soften dry, damaged hair as well as add a healthy shine.

Shea Butter
Moisturizes dry and damaged hair as well as skin. Softens beard and helps repair hair breakage. Shea butter can help with beard-druff, eczema or dermatitis. It's a skin protector against weather damage cold & heat and seals in moisture and has anti-aging properties. Also, shea butter is good for your skin as it has anti-inflammatory qualities helping to reduce itchiness and rashes.

Bees Wax
Beeswax is produced by honeybees and is the natural wax they use to make honeycombs. Beeswax gives beard balm and mustache wax their holding properties. Using beeswax on beards and moustache helps to style and keep the hairs together as well as keeping hair soft and clean. Because it's a sealant it will also repel dirt, grime and moisture, as well as keeping the hair shiny.

Essential Oils
These oils are what give our beard balms and beard oils their beautiful scent. Essential oils are natural oils, typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant, tree, flower or other source from which it is extracted.
